Birka was een belangrijke handelsstad in het (vroeg)middeleeuwse Zweden. In n van de graven is bijvoorbeeld een ring met Arabische inscriptie gevonden, wat aantoont dat Birka naast Scandinavische, Finse west Europese en centraal Europese handel ook contacten onderhield met de Orint. De handelspositie van de stad nam af toen er rond het jaar 1000 een christelijke stad in de buurt
