Nose helmets like this were worn in Western Europe from the 9th century onwards. On the Bayeux Tapestry, both Anglo Saxon and Norman warriors are shown wearing this type of helmet. It was likely used up until the First Crusade. Around the 11th century, another type of nasal helmet, made from a single piece, was developed. This design was stronger than the older spangenhelm.
